Greece is intensifying its diplomatic efforts at the United Nations General Assembly, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis engaging in high-level discussions focused on regional security, maritime safety, and international cooperation. These efforts come as Greece prepares to take on the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October, marking a critical period with ongoing global conflicts and the upcoming selection process for the next UN Secretary-General.
During the assembly, Gerapetritis emphasized Greece’s trilateral discussions with Cyprus, Jordan, and Egypt, highlighting the importance of these talks amid the continuing instability in the Middle East. Bilateral meetings were also held with foreign ministers from India, Brazil, and Eritrea, underscoring Greece’s strategic efforts to fortify regional partnerships alongside Cyprus.
A notable collaboration with India saw Greece co-hosting a high-level event on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, particularly focusing on their applications in shipping, maritime security, and freedom of navigation. This aligns with Greece’s position as a major global shipping nation, as it continues to advocate for the protection of maritime routes and the uninterrupted movement of goods.
Gerapetritis also took part in the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers, further reinforcing Greece’s commitment to maritime issues.
