On October 1, Greece took on the presidency of the United Nations Security Council, marking the start of its second and final term during its 2025-26 tenure as an elected member. Ambassador Aglaia Balta, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, will lead the 15-member council throughout October.
During Greece’s presidency, the Security Council is set to tackle numerous pressing global issues. These include the ongoing war in Ukraine, escalating tensions in Gaza, and conflicts involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally, the council will focus on the situation in Sudan and the security crisis in Haiti, where international forces are aiding efforts to curb armed violence before upcoming elections.
Greece’s leadership role comes at a critical juncture as discussions surrounding the selection of the next UN Secretary-General are also underway. The Security Council is tasked with recommending a candidate to the General Assembly, with the new Secretary-General expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.
As Greece navigates its responsibilities, the council’s agenda highlights the interconnected challenges faced by the international community. By addressing these issues, the presidency aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among member states to promote global stability and peace.
