UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to Germany underscores the evolving strategic partnership between the two nations, which has been cultivated over years of collaboration in various sectors including politics, economics, energy, and culture. The diplomatic relationship between the UAE and Germany began in 1972 and has since flourished, particularly in trade and investment. Last year, the UAE emerged as Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf, with bilateral trade surpassing Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion).
Approximately 2,000 German enterprises, including well-known corporations such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, are currently operating in the UAE. The energy sector is another area where the two countries have strengthened their cooperation, particularly in renewable energy, climate initiatives, decarbonization, and energy security. Notably, a 2022 agreement between the UAE and Germany aims to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation, focusing on UAE liquefied natural gas supplies to Germany and joint clean energy projects.
The partnership extends beyond trade and energy, encompassing research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. Political relations were formally elevated in 2004 with the signing of a strategic partnership agreement, which includes areas such as regional security, economic cooperation, and research. This agreement has provided a solid framework for both countries to enhance their collaboration on various fronts.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains robust. Both nations continue to seek opportunities to expand their cooperation across strategic sectors, demonstrating resilience and a shared commitment to mutual growth and development.
