In a recent session of the European Parliament, members of Hungary’s FIDESZ–KDNP delegation voiced their concerns about the European Commission’s silence on recent political and constitutional changes in Hungary. The delegation claims these developments threaten the integrity of democratic institutions in the country.
During a joint meeting of the Parliament’s Committees on Budgets and Budgetary Control, Hungarian MEPs Tamás Deutsch, Csaba Dömötör, and András László urged the European Commission to clarify its stance on a series of issues. These include constitutional amendments, limitations on political competition, adjustments affecting parliamentary mandates, and the independence of state institutions.
The Hungarian lawmakers pointed out that the Commission had previously expressed rule-of-law concerns and withheld EU funding from Hungary. However, they noted an absence of response to the latest constitutional changes. They questioned whether these changes align with European democratic standards, pressing the need for transparency and uniform application of democratic principles across all EU member states.
The FIDESZ–KDNP delegation emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic principles consistently throughout the European Union. Despite the questions raised during the hearing, representatives from the European Commission did not offer detailed responses or clarify their position on the issues discussed.
