Hungary Airlines is navigating the evolving landscape of European air cargo as new customs regulations influence the market. The implementation of a €3 customs duty on small shipments from July 1 has notably impacted e-commerce cargo volumes throughout Europe. This change initially led to a spike in shipments in June, driven by retailers eager to move goods ahead of the new rule. However, since the duty took effect, July saw a decline in volumes and extended processing times. As the market begins to stabilize, the industry is also bracing for an additional €2 processing fee anticipated in November.
In response to these shifting conditions, Hungary Airlines is adapting its operational strategy. The airline’s flagship freighter, an Airbus A330-243F with registration HA-LHU, underwent scheduled maintenance during this period. However, global supply-chain disruptions caused delays, extending the C-check until mid-September. The aircraft is projected to resume full operations by the end of September. In the meantime, Hungary Airlines is revising its route network and cargo-handling procedures and is temporarily reducing flight frequencies to enhance aircraft load factors amid changing market dynamics.
The fleet composition of Hungary Airlines is also undergoing changes. The second aircraft, a converted Airbus A330-243P2F with registration HA-ZTO, is set to exit the fleet following its owner’s decision to sell. Despite this, the airline remains dedicated to expanding its fleet size and is actively exploring leasing and growth opportunities to strengthen its operational capabilities.
In addition to its current operations, Hungary Airlines is broadening its service offerings by venturing into specialized cargo markets. Starting in the third quarter, the airline plans to enter the live-animal transportation and temperature-controlled cargo sectors. By utilizing real-time monitoring technology, Hungary Airlines aims to deliver more specialized services and explore opportunities for higher-margin operations. This strategic expansion underscores the airline’s commitment to adapting to market needs and seizing new business opportunities.
