Greek expatriates in Saudi Arabia have expressed their approval of Greece’s decision to supply military support to the Kingdom, a move seen as reinforcing bilateral ties and offering reassurance amid growing regional tensions. Greece has deployed Patriot air defense systems to Saudi Arabia, aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure, including key energy facilities along the Red Sea coast. This deployment marks an enhancement in defense collaboration between the two nations, reflecting their mutual interest in regional security.
Greek residents in Saudi Arabia, such as Ioannis Barmpounis and Dimitra Chasapi, have voiced their pride in Greece’s contribution, citing its personal significance as they continue to maintain strong connections to their homeland while living in the Kingdom. They emphasized the mutual trust and shared cultural values between Greek and Saudi societies, such as hospitality and respect for family.
During a visit to the Greek Patriot air defense contingent in Yanbu on October 15, Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to assisting Saudi security. He engaged in discussions with Saudi leaders on defense cooperation and regional developments, underscoring the importance of the partnership amid concerns over missile and drone threats to strategic infrastructure.
For Greece, the deployment offers valuable operational experience in modern air defense systems and serves to fortify its security relationship with Saudi Arabia. Despite the ongoing regional tensions, Greek expatriates reported feeling safe in Saudi Arabia and expressed optimism that the cooperation between the two countries could extend beyond defense into economic, professional, and cultural spheres.
Both Barmpounis and Chasapi hope that the continued collaboration will contribute to regional stability, enhance diplomatic relations, and foster lasting peace in the region.
