In a significant escalation, Ukraine has executed one of its most extensive drone offensives against Russia since the conflict’s inception, as reported by Russian officials. This attack resulted in the deaths of at least six individuals and ignited a substantial fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed to have intercepted 1,478 Ukrainian drones within a 24-hour timeframe, dubbing it the highest number ever recorded in a single day. These figures have not been independently confirmed.
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, stated that approximately 600 drones targeted the Moscow region, with 201 drones reportedly neutralized. The region witnessed the death of one person amid these attacks. A considerable blaze erupted at a Wildberries distribution center located near Podolsk, roughly 25 miles south of central Moscow. The facility, spanning about 250,000 square meters, suffered significant damage and was rendered inoperative, according to Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian authorities have increasingly employed long-range drones to strike Russian military and economic assets situated far from the front lines. They allege that several Wildberries facilities have been targeted due to their purported use for military logistics.
The attacks underscore Ukraine’s advancing long-range strike capabilities, while Russia continues its reliance on drones and missiles to target Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Concurrently, Russian strikes resulted in the deaths of at least seven people in Ukraine, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile assault on Kyiv led to injuries for six individuals and caused fires, notably at a major book market where numerous businesses reportedly lost their entire inventory.
In a related development, a Spanish fighter jet, part of a NATO patrol, intercepted and shot down a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace, as confirmed by NATO officials. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of persistently targeting civilian infrastructure, asserting that Moscow launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the past week.
This intensification in hostilities reflects both nations’ expanded use of long-range weaponry, thereby increasing the risk of casualties and destruction far removed from the frontlines.
