Spotify is taking steps to address the rising presence of AI-generated artists by implementing new strategies to reduce their visibility on its platform. Starting in September, the company will label these AI-created artist profiles with an “AI persona” tag. This label will appear on both artist profiles and track listings, aiming to help users distinguish between authentic musicians and artificial identities.
In addition to labeling, Spotify plans to exclude AI personas from personalized recommendations by default. This initiative is designed to safeguard real musicians from being overshadowed by AI-generated content, which could otherwise dilute their exposure. The platform will allow artists to voluntarily disclose if their identities are AI-generated. However, to ensure transparency, Spotify will also employ both human reviewers and AI-powered tools to identify AI personas that are not self-disclosed.
The introduction of these measures is a response to the rapid increase of AI-generated music. Spotify has previously highlighted the issue by noting the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the influx of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes that transparency is crucial. The company believes listeners have a growing interest in knowing whether a track is created by a human artist or an AI-generated identity. By providing clear labeling and managing AI content recommendations, Spotify seeks to maintain a balance that protects genuine musicians while accommodating technological advancements.
