Brighton’s Second-Half Resurgence Stuns Manchester City

Brighton & Hove Albion produced an impressive second-half performance to claim a 1-1 draw against Manchester City on Wednesday, with the visitors controlling proceedings after equalizing. The result means City have now gone three Premier League matches without a win and sit five points behind Arsenal.
Manchester City took the lead four minutes before halftime when Erling Haaland converted a penalty awarded after Diego Gomez fouled Jeremy Doku in the box. VAR confirmed the decision, and Haaland made no mistake from 12 yards. The goal was his 150th for the club, ended a three-game goal drought, and took his Premier League tally for the season to 20.
The second half began with City seeking to extend their advantage. Bernardo Silva had an excellent opportunity when he capitalized on a Brighton error, but his shot struck the post. The match became increasingly contentious when City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper engaged in a heated confrontation, resulting in yellow cards for both.
Brighton’s equalizer arrived in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who produced a finish of genuine quality. The Japanese international received a pass from the flank, took a touch at the edge of the box, and guided a precise low shot into the far corner.
The visitors grew in confidence after scoring, taking command of possession and the game’s tempo. They nearly snatched victory when Mitoma’s excellent work created a chance for Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s effort was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s attempt to convert the rebound from near the goal line struck the woodwork. City’s final opportunity fell to Haaland in injury time when he broke clear, but Verbruggen’s outstanding save denied the Norwegian and secured a valuable point for Brighton.
